SAS is an "A" School The School of Arts and Sciences has received an "A" grade from the Florida Department of Education for the 2008-2009 school year and for each year that we have been graded (beginning in 2002-2003).You can access our most recent School Public Accountability Report (SPAR) on the Leon County Schools website.
SAS FULLY ACCREDITED BY SACS SOUTHERN ASSOCIATION OF COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS Article from the August 1, 2008 Tallahassee Democrat: The meticulous work by administrators, board members and parents this past year paid off for the School of Arts and Sciences when they recently learned the school earned its accreditation.
It's the only charter school in Leon County Schools to have accreditation status, said Bev Owens, divisional director of special programs for the district. The school district has five charter schools.
The school earned accreditation from the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement, and it had to be evaluated by a team of professionals from outside the school. The school officials also had to create a "continuous plan of improvement."
"It was really a great process," said Principal Debo Powers. "You get to get people together and see what could help improve the school." Seven standards had to be met, which include leadership, school vision, teaching and learning, and stake-holder communication and relationships.
Leon County Schools is currently going through its own accreditation process as a district. The School of Arts & Sciences had to do its process independently since it's a charter school, Powers said.
"NCA CASI Accreditation is a rigorous process that focuses the entire school on the primary goal of creating lifelong learners," Mark Elgart, president and CEO of AdvancED, the parent organization of the NCA CASI. "The School of Arts and Sciences is to be commended for engaging in this process and demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement."
To maintain its accreditation, the school will need to submit a self-report every two years and go through the accreditation process in the next five years. By Tallahassee Democrat Reporter TaMaryn Waters
SAS Honored at Florida Charter School Conference At the November, 2006 Florida Charter School Conference in Orlando , our school was highlighted as one of 10 excellent charter schools in Florida . We are featured in a publication by the FL Department of Education called “A Decade of Progress” celebrating 10 years of charter schools in this state.
SAS Named a Top Charter School by US Dept. of Education The U.S. Department of Education Office of Innovation and Improvement named SAS as one of eight top charter schools in the nation. The Department's publication " Innovations in Education: Successful Charter Schools" features a profile of SAS.
